(For more about how to do the practice of standing, please see my post, <a href=\"http:\/\/synergy-pt.net\/niablog\/2008\/06\/26\/the-five-stages-of-self-healing-standing\/\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Five Stages of Self-Healing: \u00a0Standing<\/span><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Remember, what we call &#8220;Standing&#8221; in The Five Stages of Self-Healing, is, in its classic form, actually squatting, monkey-like. \u00a0Along the continuum of developmental movement, we eventually rise from squatting into upright standing as we prepare to walk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most profound offering that the practice of Standing brings is the re-orientation of the spine from horizontal to vertical. \u00a0This is a profound change anatomically, physiologically and neurologically, as well as energetically.<\/p>\n<p>Mysteriously, all the previous stages, Embryonic, Creeping and Crawling &#8211; each with its own unique sensation &#8211; have prepared us for standing. \u00a0We begin with the sensation of allness in Embryonic, move through the sensation of being horizontal in Creeping and Crawling, to find ourselves vertical for the first time in standing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Body:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Physical flexibility of hips, low back, pelvic floor, knees and calves.<br \/>\nPreparation of the body for childbirth.<br \/>\nIntegration of the lumbar and cervical curves of the spine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Mind:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mental flexibility.<br \/>\nBeing &#8220;on top of it.&#8221;<br \/>\nNaturally attaining a new point of view.\u00a0<br \/>\nSeeing across large vistas.\u00a0<br \/>\nTaking a stand.<br \/>\nKnowing where you stand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Emotions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Emotional flexibility.<br \/>\nStanding together.<br \/>\nStanding up for yourself.<br \/>\nFeeling supported from below.<br \/>\nStanding on your own two feet.\u00a0<br \/>\nFeeling where you stand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spirit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Presence.<br \/>\nPlugging into the Earth&#8217;s\u00a0rising\u00a0energy.<br \/>\nPlugging into\u00a0the Heaven&#8217;s\u00a0descending\u00a0energy.<br \/>\nMarriage of Heaven and Earth in the body.<br \/>\nTree of life body.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And here are some applications of the practice of Standing to Nia&#8217;s three movement arts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Dance Arts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Free pelvic energy of Jazz Dance.\u00a0<br \/>\nRooted yet ascending like a tree in Duncan Dance.<br \/>\nArms and hand are free to create shapes in space in Modern Dance.<br \/>\nBase of the body as foundation for vertical alignment.<br \/>\nBalance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Martial Arts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nia&#8217;s seven martial arts stances: closed stance, open stance, A stance, riding stance, bow stance and one-legged stance.<br \/>\nHara connected to the Earth.\u00a0<br \/>\nMonkey energy in martial arts forms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Healing Arts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Head floats to the Heaven, as in Alexander Technique.<br \/>\nYoga&#8217;s conscious alignment of bones in Tree Pose and other standing postures.<br \/>\nThe conscious sensation of stacking head over chest over pelvis over feet in Feldenkrais.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some of the benefits that the practice of standing brings.
